Living and Learning

I've learned over the years of speaking to audiences about some of my favorite topics that I need to adapt to the circumstances. And over the time that I have been cruise speaking my talks have developed and grown - in both number and quality.

I watch other speakers and learn from them. And not just the excellent speakers! Many poor speakers have something to teach us - often how not to tackle the task, but sometimes with little gems of good ideas sprinkled within their presentations.

What I learn in my cruise lecturing I apply in my key note talks - and vice versa. Life is a journey - and why would we go on a journey if we don't plan to take anything from the journey. One passenger on a recent Silversea cruise who had seen me before on Celebrity told me how much he enjoyed one of my talks second time through - and how much he valued the way it had grown since the first time (which he had also rated very well).

Finding the Key

We all know that to unlock a door you need the correct key. Even in this digital age, where the key could be a pin number or an iris scan, if it is nor correct the door will not open.

Several years ago, sitting in the theatre on a Celebrity cruise ship Kathy and I listened to an excellent lecturer. Over the years, on board various cruise lines we've seen lots of average cruise speakers, a few very poor speakers and a handful of great ones - like that man. As we left that theatre, simultaneously we said something along the lines of "We can do that!"

But where to find the key?

I did a lot of research, spoke to a few cruise line contacts and agents. The message seemed to be - "Pay an agent $50 to $70 a day to get booked".

"I killed!" or "The audience sucked."

You can't go through life believing that someone else is responsible for any failure. Mind you I don't think Jerry Lewis actually believed that himself! There are many theories and gurus that propound the basis that by being positive about your goals you increase the likelihood of achieving them. I support that principle myself and encourage all my clients to get their own minds in the right frame. If they believe they will not succeed they stand a much better chance of failure!! J

I am a great believer in making the best of life. And I have found, over the years, that if I make the most of the things I really enjoy so many of those other tasks are easier to do - and some of them even do themselves (well OK I get a bit of help by delegating!!)

Kathy and I really enjoy travelling. And we just love being pampered. So cruising was a natural for us. I’m serious. We only have one life. Are you doing what you are intended to do with yours? Or what people think you should do? Or what you will really enjoy doing?

What is success?

My mentor, Michael Neill, defines success in these words “Success is waking up in the morning and looking forward to your day, enjoying your experience of the day, and going to bed at night looking forward to waking up the next morning.”

In other words success is an attitude of mind. I’ve met cruise speakers who moan the whole cruise about the lack of interest shown by the cruise team – ignoring the fact that the speaker is often the least of their problems when they have prissey entertainers, high expectation passengers, a demanding boss and even the odd emergency to deal with.

Our job is to get out there for an hour a day on sea days and provide an entertaining and enlightening diversion for the passengers – one that the cruise director doesn’t have to worry about. And having done that little thing, the rest of the task is to sit back, sip cocktails, watch the great shows, enjoy great service and food and explore fascinating ports. Oh and watch and learn from some other great speakers. Do that and you have achieved success.

Divided by a Common Language

George Bernard Shaw is credited with this phrase and Churchill once said that “The United States of America and the United Kingdom are two great nations divided by a common language”. As the son of a wealthy New York heiress and as an international statesman he should know.

I have seen many cruise speakers who make no concessions at all to this difference. An English academic who talks in Oxford code or a New Jersey life coach who makes no concessions to his international audience will get poorer ratings than the speakers who find out the nationality split of the passengers and talks to them rather than beyond them.

Many cruise directors give an idea of the nationality split at the welcome on board show – even if you don’t attend the show it’s worth watching the relevant bit of the stateroom TV showing to find out.

And always use words and phrases that the whole audience will understand. Remember that a part of your audience will be the dozens of nationalities of crew, who get the chance to watch the TV re-runs on their cabin TV service when they finish work – often in the early hours.

Oh – and watch what you do with your hands! While Governor Schwarzenegger’s cheery “thumbs up” might seem innocent enough, in some parts of the world this is just plain offensive! Whatever you don’t give this sign to a traffic cop in Rio!!!

Fly the way the sailors do!

When crew join, leave or rejoin a ship they often have to fly to get to or from the relevant port. Recognising this a number of specialist travel agencies exist that negotiate special air fares (maritime or marine fares). These fares are very well priced, more flexible that most advanced purchase fares; they usually inlclude additional baggage allowances (commonly a 2 piece allowance) AND, as contracted speakers on board cruise ships we are usually entitled to these excellent offers.

There are several specialist agencies. We have traveled with both www.flygmt.com and http://www.totaltravelmarine.com/.

You will need to register and demonstrate that you are travelling to join a ship on a contract. And you should have your speaker contract or letter of engagement with you when you check in.

Where do your neighbors go?

Where do your neighbors spend their vacations? We live in sunny Spain and many of our neighbors head for local beaches – or even to cooler northern climes. In winter they may go to the Canary Islands or the Spanish Caribbean. Or they may seek out the culture of Europe’s many cities.

They are often amazed by our vacation plans. Not surprising really. A number of other expats enjoy cruising. Often a couple, or even more a year. But of course, even with the best deals around, they end up paying far more than we do.

Getting there on time

My message for today is “Get to the ship on time!!”

On a recent cruise one speaker missed the ship because he left no time for delays on his connecting flight. Why would you leave such things to chance I wonder.

Our next cruise (thank you DANIEL HALL) is on one of the smaller premium lines that pays flights, gratuities and even drinks on board. When the proposed flight schedule came through yesterday – including a short international connection - Kathy & I decided to offer an option with a bit more leeway. To motivate yourself to achieve your goals use this simple exercise -

1. Choose your goal – maybe a dream that you have always harbored secretly. Perhaps your goal will be cruising free?

2. On a scale of 1 to 5 choose where you are now – where 1 is nowhere just yet and 5 means that this goal is in every fiber of your being – night and day.

3. Make a list of the steps you need to achieve along the way to move from the score you have now to reach a 5. Go right back to basics and note what your achievement will be when you know that you have progressed one point on the scale. And list all these steps along the way.

Naturally I want to do a good job. I want them to invite me back – and I want to leave a good impression to reflect well on all the rest of you in this free cruising network of ours.

So I did my homework. I listened to Daniel’s advice (I always do). I checked with the enrichment officer at the line’s HQ to see if they have a preferred or (mandatory!) style for PowerPoint presentations, and what else they expect of their speakers. Some have very clear guidelines. So it’s always important to check.

I have a good reputation. Speakers Cruise Free has a good reputation. Every time any one of us cruises free the reputation of the rest of us depends on how well we do.

On being flexible

Today is day 7 of our cruise from Honolulu to Vancouver. The second leg of our Trans-Pacific adventure and our round the world cruise free travels.

But tomorrow, day 8, will be our first sea day. We have spent the last wonderful week touring the islands of Hawaii. So, apart from Seattle we have already had all our port days.

This posed a scheduling problem for the destination talks. So we agreed to present Pacific islands relevant talks on port days and have them run on the ship’s stateroom TV system.

To make that work well I re-jigged a number of my images and added more bullet points.

Always offer more

Each cruise speaker contract specifies what we are expected to do – and, of course what we are not expected to do (damage the reputation of the line for example).

I always ensure I understand those criteria – and then make sure I over-deliver.

1) I use great quality images, usually from educational or tourist board sources, who are delighted to provide them for this purpose.

2) I reflect the cruise line positively – for example I include their latest developments in my “Grand Tour” talk, which looks at the development of tourism; and I do the same in my “Green Ticket” talk that studies how tourism can reduce its impact on the environment.

3) I NEVER argue with the cruise team – and only ever talk positively in front of other passengers. If I have a problem, or see one elsewhere I have a very private conversation with my contact, away from prying eyes.

As a result I have managed to achieve beneficial change and am a respected and sought after cruise speaker. How did I get here? How do I manage to CRUISE FREE several times a year?

What a gift

When Kathy and I started CRUISING FREE we offered a true “two for the price of one” deal, where both of us were speaking. We needed only one cabin, meaning that the cruise companies had an extra revenue earning cabin to put on sale.

This was a sweet deal for them and it really got us established as able and popular CRUISE SPEAKERS.

Now that we are both established we no longer both need to work. Did I say “work”? You must understand that cruising the SPEAKERS CRUISE FREE.COM way we speak for less than an hour and usually only on sea days. So just 3 or 4 times a cruise is typical.

As I was saying – now that we are established we no longer both need to work. Typically now we travel on my “ticket”.

Bearing Gifts

It doesn’t need to be much – but it’s surprising what a small gesture can do.

When I first met DANIEL HALL of SPEAKERS CRUISE FREE.COM he told me that he always takes a small gift for the contacts on board.

Since then we have taken coasters, bookmarks, copies of one of my books etc. as a way of marking our arrival. At the welcome on board meeting I hand over some small gift to our contact and usually it becomes a talking point throughout the cruise. I’ve seen our coffee mug or fridge magnet prominently displayed in the cruise staff office.

And it gets remembered. I have occasionally sent a signed copy of one of my books to the Cruise Director and to the Captain. We’ve been invited to the bridge, to the Captain’s table for dinner, to exclusive cocktail parties (make sure you have your best dinner suit with you!). And on one ship the Captain who we had met on an earlier cruise on another ship noticed my name and mentioned me in his welcome on board address, encouraging passengers to come to my talks, which he “always thoroughly enjoyed”.

It costs so little to make an impact.

Don’t believe everything you read!

Just a tip … as we all know in our hearts, not everything we read on Wikipedia is true. Yes! Yes! I know – it may sound like a calumny. But even with the founder’s very best effort not everything can be verified.

I only say this because I know that some speakers have been tempted to work word for word from a single source. Whatever your source, do check – unless you truly are the expert to whom everyone else would turn for the most reliable version.

Check a few different sources. Make sure it stacks up. There could be little more embarrassing than finding out that folks in the audience don’t just know more than you – but consider you a fraud.

I once saw a cruise speaker tie himself in knots following a question from one of the audience who clearly knew far more about the Counts of Barcelona than he did. Why pretend to be an expert if you are not. He could easily have chosen so many other Catalan topics where safe and reliable facts are easily available.

I am rather persistent I have to admit. And that determination has helped me so often in my business life – and as we CRUISE FREE with SPEAKERS CRUISE FREE.COM.

6 months ago I contacted one of the “6 star” cruise lines on the books of DANIEL HALL to request a May sailing. The coordinator there told me, very politely, that this departure was already allocated, but that he would contact me if there was another opportunity. That might have been code for an outright rejection.

Never one to give up I sent the contact one of our charming Christmas cards and thought no more about it. On Tuesday evening we were hosting a superb dinner party here and I popped into my office to check the diary. In one of my cruise ship presentations I tell audiences that many sailors consider it unlucky to have bananas aboard, but that would be surprising news to DelMonte and other producers who ship millions of pounds of bananas from Costa Rica each year.

Seeing the DelMonte banana plantation and processing plant was a bonus on our just completed Royal Caribbean cruise aboard Jewel of the Seas. We found out how fast these one-time producing trees grow, why the banana flower is cut off as the fruit begins to develop, how growers keep the top bunch of bananas from ripening before those lower are ready to pick, and most amazingly, how they know when to pick the green bananas so they'll be ready to eat just when they hit the grocery store shelves.

Years ago when I was involved with a significant ground tour of a small country in S.E. Asia, we picked green bananas and couldn't understand why they never ripened. Well, duh, we didn't know the exact number of days from initial growth to ripening. If we had carried the bananas long enough in our back packs, they would have turned yellow and attracted fruit flies.

Who’s your most honest critic?

I’m just finishing a few new talks for our Pacific adventure in the spring.

I’ve found some wonderful material out there – including ready made presentation elements in the public domain.

As always I pass each PowerPoint presentation to my most honest critic, Kathy, my wife! She tells me what she really thinks – “a bit serious”, or maybe even “10 slides beyond my tolerance threshold”. Or sometimes just “that slide just doesn’t fit”.

Who critiques your talks for you? Unless you get a fresh set of eyes and ears to look them over any inbuilt errors are unlikely to get picked up.

Keeping up with the Joneses

At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas (CES 2011), it has been estimated there are over 100 tablet computers on display. The iPad is no longer the only option – although it may still be outstanding.

There are dozens of amazing 3D TV displays and Logitech is showcasing its Revue device which operates the new Google TV system. It seems like no time since Apple launched their Apple TV.

My point is that we, like Apple, cannot rest on our laurels.

Donny & Marie may well have been too young, but on so many of our cruises as fare paying passengers (in the old days) the speakers all seemed to be much older than their audiences. We realised that what the cruise companies need is variety, to relate to their very varied passenger profiles.

I never cease to be amazed at how easy it can be to impress. I’ve just had feedback from a recent cruise, in which the activities manager reported “outstanding use of technology”!

Apparently the fact that I have insert video clips in my PowerPoint presentations is a bit “cutting edge”. But it is so, so simple to do. Using the insert/movie clip buttons, and choosing the automatic option means it just runs when I click the next slide. As I use a wireless hand held slide changer it may look good to the audience – but it seems even the staff were impressed.

Well I learned to keep upping my game. I’ve done it all my business life, I’ve encouraged folks I mentor to do the same – and one of the reasons that I warmed so quickly to DANIEL HALL at SPEAKERS CRUISE FREE was the obviously natural style of his innovation – and the expectation that we, his network, will constantly strive to improve.

Just a few days before a recent cruise I was told that the line has its own house style for enrichment speakers’ PowerPoint presentations. I had 5 talks with 80 to 90 slides in each!!! And I had two days to pack, put business on hold and re-format all my presentations.

So my tip for today – always check in plenty of time if the cruise line you are speaking for has any special requirements – such as a corporate template for you slides. That way you’ll have plenty of time to comply!

At the end of each cruise I always say “thank you” to the team on board.

SPEAKERS_CRUISE_FREE is a network of great speakers and I know that my behavior reflects on all our members. Just as your behavior reflects on me and everyone else.

SPEAKERS_CRUISE_FREE Is a real find. So I try to do the right thing to build up the reputation of all our speakers. If I behave well and say “thank you” I hope that you will get a warm reception next time you step on the same ship for a speaker cruise.

I hope that you will show the rest of us the same respect.

And it is amazing just how far a little courtesy can go. We have had invitations to cocktail parties and even occasionally to the Captain’s table, because we are seen to show respect.

Colors of Fall

In the UK and Canada we are celebrating our Harvest Festivals, or Thanksgiving. Earlier than Thanksgiving in the USA, we too take the opportunity to be grateful for the bounty that we enjoy.

On Thursday Kathy & I set off on our next bountiful adventure, thanks to DANIEL_HALL and SPEAKERS_CRUISE_FREE.COM.

This is our last planned cruise of 2010, and I will be speaking on a great itinerary heading to New England and Canada to see the Fall colors. Over on this side of the "Pond" we call Fall "Autumn". But on both sides it is traditionally a time to be grateful for the gifts that we receive.

I was talking to a great potential speaker just the other day, who said to me "I couldn't do that! I'm not worthy"!!!

Plan Early

When we first started cruising for FREE we simply asked "where would you like to send us?" And we had some great cruises.

But over the years we've become a little pickier. Thanks to SPEA KERS_CRUISE_FREE.COM we have cruised all around the world - and all of it has been FREE! We have had some wonderful experiences, many unexpected. We have dined with several captains, been invited onto the bridge for sail aways, entertained by cruise directors, thanked by enrichment coordinators, and (best of all) invited back over and over.

Now we choose where we want to go next and get our requests in early.

Our main cruises for next year are already booked, based mainly on a series of re-positioning cruises that form the major legs of a 2 month round the world trip to mark a "big" birthday. And guess what! The cruises are FREE thanks to SPREAKERS_CRUISE_FREE.COM.
