When I first met DANIEL HALL he advised me always to carry one or two spare lectures with me on every cruise. That was some years ago. And only a few months later I was one of 2 speakers on a Mediterranean cruise. The other speaker was ill prepared and was not well received by the passengers. The Cruise Director decided to cut his schedule short. He mentioned that he would now have unhappy guests because the program was reduced. I offered to add in a couple of extra talks, all well prepared and researched and all backed by high quality Power Point. He bit my hand off!

Over here in Europe we are entering the big Easter holiday weekend, when half the population seems to be on the move and there is a run on supermarkets for all the essential (and many non-essential) items that have no risk of running out anyway!!

We are at home in Spain this Easter. The first time for a few years. Last Easter we were mid-Pacific on one of a series of free cruises that took us round the world. The year before we were cruising the Greek islands – also free!!

That may seem to be a strange question. I ask because many cruise speakers are dependent on their agent to find cruises for them. And they have to take what they are offered - or nothing at all!

I didn’t fancy that idea, especially because they can charge up to $70 a day for each cruise booked.

Living and Learning

I've learned over the years of speaking to audiences about some of my favorite topics that I need to adapt to the circumstances. And over the time that I have been cruise speaking my talks have developed and grown - in both number and quality.

I watch other speakers and learn from them. And not just the excellent speakers! Many poor speakers have something to teach us - often how not to tackle the task, but sometimes with little gems of good ideas sprinkled within their presentations.

What I learn in my cruise lecturing I apply in my key note talks - and vice versa. Life is a journey - and why would we go on a journey if we don't plan to take anything from the journey. One passenger on a recent Silversea cruise who had seen me before on Celebrity told me how much he enjoyed one of my talks second time through - and how much he valued the way it had grown since the first time (which he had also rated very well).

We all know that to unlock a door you need the correct key. Even in this digital age, where the key could be a pin number or an iris scan, if it is nor correct the door will not open.

Comedian Jerry Lewis used to write in his diary after a show. His jotting usually said either -

"I killed!" or "The audience sucked."

You can't go through life believing that someone else is responsible for any failure. Mind you I don't think Jerry Lewis actually believed that himself! There are many theories and gurus that propound the basis that by being positive about your goals you increase the likelihood of achieving them. I support that principle myself and encourage all my clients to get their own minds in the right frame. If they believe they will not succeed they stand a much better chance of failure!! J
