Big ship? Small ship?

by Andrew Johnson

We are now on the final leg of our cruise speaking round the world tour – free cruises thanks to SpeakersCruiseFree.com.

This a ship with only 600 passengers and I’m getting much better promotion on board than I’ve ever seen before.

So my tip to you is to have a selection of descriptions of your talks of different lengths – a single punchy sentence for use on the really big ships, through to a 4 line paragraph giving more description for use on the 800 passenger or smaller ships.

My first time

by Andrew Johnson

Tomorrow we board a ship with a new company – well new to us. This will be our first cruise with them. Thanks to Daniel Hall at SpeakersCruiseFree.com.

Kauai Wailua FallsNaturally I want to do a good job. I want them to invite me back – and I want to leave a good impression to reflect well on all the rest of you in this free cruising network of ours.

So I did my homework. I listened to Daniel’s advice (I always do). I checked with the enrichment officer at the line’s HQ to see if they have a preferred or (mandatory!) style for PowerPoint presentations, and what else they expect of their speakers. Some have very clear guidelines. So it’s always important to check. Winking smile

I have a good reputation. Speakers Cruise Free has a good reputation. Every time any one of us cruises free the reputation of the rest of us depends on how well we do.

I intend to do well – for my sake – and for yours!

On being flexible

By Andrew Johnson

Today is day 7 of our cruise from Honolulu to Vancouver. The second leg of our Trans-Pacific adventure and our round the world cruise free travels.

Kailua Kona 2But tomorrow, day 8, will be our first sea day. We  have spent the last wonderful week touring the islands of Hawaii. So, apart from Seattle we have already had all our port days.

This posed a scheduling problem for the destination talks. So we agreed to present Pacific islands relevant talks on port days and have them run on the ship’s stateroom TV system.

To make that work well I re-jigged a number of Honolulu 2my images and added more bullet points.

The feedback has been outstanding!

Flexibility – that and knowing your subject are the keys to good preparation.

Kangaroos & Tasmanian Devils

Sunrise Over Sydney Opera House

An adventure to remember !!! --- Cruising around the south of Australia, including the state of Tasmania, and New Zealand. Eighteen days in the Indian Ocean, Southern Ocean, Tasman Sea, and Atlantic -- into ports that are as exotic in person as they are in travel brochures. Through the fiord-like sounds of New Zealand where the mountains run right down into the sea - and visits to remote Maori village to see the people who seemed so strange and far away in the movie Whale Rider. And -- And -- And -- being treated as a celebrity all over the magnificent Rhapsody of the Seas and where ever we made a chance encounter with cruisers in the ports. Thanks to Daniel and the wonderful staff at Speakers Cruise Free and Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines.

Why do they pay?

Kathy and I are on the first sea day of two back to back cruises across the Pacific. The first cruise takes us from Sydney, Australia to Fiji, then on the the islands of French Polynesia. From there we sail north to Honolulu.

Fiji 3As well as me (I’m the enrichment speaker) we have a great destination speaker and enhancement and craft lecturers. Why do they pay a daily charge of $45 to their speaker agency? Just think on this 17 day cruise that’s nearly $600. After all Kathy and I are CRUISING FREE thanks to Daniel Hall’s system at Speakerscruisefree.com.

Happy cruising Eileen

By Andrew Johnson

I don’t hold back when I’m speaking to friends and acquaintances about FREE CRUISING!

Why would I? DANIEL HALL at SPEAKERSCRUISEFREE.COM has introduced us to a wonderful way to sail the world’s seas, while the cruise companies pay.Silver Cloud Silver Whisper Sisters

So yesterday I was talking again with a good friend, who was asking about the wonderful round the world trip that we are about to enjoy. Eileen said that she had been thinking about the opportunity. She is about to retire from the education sector and would love to use some of her new free time to do what we do.

So naturally I put her in touch with DANIEL. Well I’m not going to keep this sort of secret to myself!

Always offer more

From Andrew Johnson

Each cruise speaker contract specifies what we are expected to do – and, of course what we are not expected to do (damage the reputation of the line for example).

I always ensure I understand those criteria – and then make sure I over-deliver.

1) I use great quality images, usually from educational or tourist board sources, who are delighted to provide them for this purpose.

2) I reflect the cruise line positively Penguins– for example I include their latest developments in my “Grand Tour” talk, which looks at the development of tourism; and I do the same in my “Green Ticket” talk that studies how tourism can reduce its impact on the environment.

3) I NEVER argue with the cruise team – and only ever talk positively in front of other passengers. If I have a problem, or see one elsewhere I have a very private conversation with my contact, away from prying eyes.

As a result I have managed to achieve beneficial change and am a respected and sought after cruise speaker. How did I get here? How do I manage to CRUISE FREE several times a year?

Thinking of Others

From Andrew & Kathy Johnson

Helping HandsThis has been a troubled few weeks in the world. A massive earthquake in New Zealand, unrest in the Middle East and North Africa, storms in the southern states – and so much more!!

We are so grateful that we are in a position to help – albeit in such a small way.

As we CRUISE FREE we will contribute a portion of what we save on normal vacation costs to help others.

Perhaps some others will want to do the same?

What a gift

by Andrew Johnson

When Kathy and I started CRUISING FREE we offered a true “two for the price of one” deal, where both of us were speaking. We needed only one cabin,  meaning that the cruise companies had an extra revenue earning cabin to put on sale.Atlantic Dolphins

This was a sweet deal for them and it really got us established as able and popular CRUISE  SPEAKERS.

Now that we are both established we no longer both need to work. Did I say “work”? You must understand that cruising the SPEAKERSCRUISEFREE.COM  way we speak for less than an hour and usually only on sea days. So just 3 or 4 times a cruise is typical.

As I was saying – now that we are established we no longer both need to work. Typically now we travel on my “ticket”.

So Kathy’s gift to me is some of the research on my topics and to find new royalty free images for my PowerPoint presentations.

And my gift to Kathy is to prepare outstanding talks – and of course the free cruise that results.

What a gift!

Bearing Gifts

By Andrew Johnson

It doesn’t need to be much – but it’s surprising what a small gesture can do.

When I first met DANIEL HALL of SPEAKERSCRUISEFREE.COM he told me that he always takes a small gift for the contacts on board.

Since then we have taken coasters, bookmarks, copies of one of my books etc. as a way Spanish mugof marking our arrival. At the welcome on board meeting I hand over some small gift to our contact and usually it becomes a talking point throughout the cruise. I’ve seen our coffee mug or fridge magnet prominently displayed in the cruise staff office.

And it gets remembered. I have occasionally sent a signed copy of one of my books to the Cruise Director and to the Captain. We’ve been invited to the bridge, to the Captain’s table for dinner, to exclusive cocktail parties (make sure you have your best dinner suit with you!). And on  one ship the Captain who we had met on an earlier cruise on another ship noticed my name and mentioned me in his welcome on board address, encouraging passengers to come to my talks, which he “always thoroughly enjoyed”.

It costs so little to make an impact.

Don’t believe everything you read!

Just a tip … as we all know in our hearts, not everything we read on Wikipedia is true. Yes! Yes! I know – it may sound like a calumny. But even with the founder’s very best effort not everything can be verified.

P7280157I only say this because I know that some speakers have been tempted to work word for word from a single source. Whatever your source, do check – unless you truly are the expert to whom everyone else would turn for the most reliable version.

Check a few different sources. Make sure it stacks up. There could be little more embarrassing than finding out that folks in the audience don’t just know more than you – but consider you a fraud.

I once saw a cruise speaker tie himself in knots following a question from one of the audience who clearly knew far more about the Counts of Barcelona than he did. Why pretend to be an expert if you are not. He could easily have chosen so many other Catalan topics where safe and reliable facts are easily available.

At SPEAKERS CRUISE FREE. COM we are part of a very strong network. Don’t let yourself down. Don’t let the team down. Just a little effort, well directed and you will be one of the best.
